A one month of Life is Art Collective residency waste, twine, plaster, salvaged mica and salvaged paint

A pearl is a defense mechanism to a potentially threatening irritant, a finding of perfection in disaster. They are used in many cultures as panaceas to hostile ailments and are universally collected as precious gemstones.Thirty days of the communal life went into The Pearl. On day one of the residency I eliminated all trashcans from the premises. Artists, guests and interns saved every piece of refuse and were asked to meticulously collect, clean and categorize the debris. Glass bottles were re-directed into drinking glasses, organic matter was composted and all remaining –plastic, paper, string, foil, fingernails, hair etcetera was consumed by The Pearl. Each evening I broke down and rolled the detritus into a twine wrapped sphere. Over the month the sphere grew in concentric circles until it took multiple people to manipulate. At the end of the residency, I coated the Pearl with plaster and finished the spherical study with mica and a mixture of salvaged paints.

Exhibition Opening at Eiffel Society

June 22, 2010, Life is Art Collective members Tora Lopez, Kirsha Kaechele, Elliott Coon and Pamala Bishop moved into a glass and iron building (St Charles Avenue, New Orleans, LA), that once perched above Paris as a restaurant in the Eiffel Tower. The collective inhabited the space as a living-installation/performance and did not leave its grounds for a month. The remnants and inspirations of the residency became a permanent installation, Eiffel Society featuring work by 23 international artists.

Pamala: Well, what is the piece about?
KK: Well... we thought it should be something to express the transformation of our artspace into artspace + farm, a further investigation of agriculture and the growing of things, as medium. But really, to be honest, it is about that night in New York at the Nadin / Kennedy house. They went to Harbor Island, and we turned their place into a commune. Tora, Aimee and I cooked a great feast for guests whom I will protect by leaving unnamed. One course involved the most beautiful, foraged mushrooms. The feast went on into the night and we realized it was deeply wrong to throw out all our food scraps, that beautiful compost. So with the parts that were edible and could be salvaged we cooked a giant torte. It contained all the questionable refrigerator items that we realized were not rotten but "cured". With the remaining scraps we found ourselves deeply troubled. I called Fred Tomaselli at three in the morning to ask how to make a compost in New York City. His advice was sound. Our solution however, was questionable- but I think from an ecological perspective, worthy of an in-depth exploration. We decided to embrace (and I am afraid to admit this) the reality of the city's naturally existing ecosystem and employ the digestive power of rats. I am sorry that is so horrible, but it is not the end of the story. At dawn, the torte was ready and it was delicious. The remaining foodscraps, having been served to to Grove street (on Waterford mind you), were fully devoured. By whom we'll never know. And as we finished up the massive cleanup in preparation for the Nadin / Kennedy return, a miracle took place. And I believe that Tora made it happen. Through giggling, playfulness and joy, she transmuted what should have been a disgusting dust + food-scraps pile into a potpourii of salt crystals, tiny roses, a variety of herbs. I could cry just thinking about it. That is what the piece is about. An exploration of the miracle of compost, a conscious inquiry into how creation's dirtiest things are transformed into beauty and life. And besides, even Santos, our Honduran labor lead man, acknowledges that simple dirt is a universe more beautiful and mysterious than any artwork.

Tora: So, I have Heide's worms for the piece but there are also a lot of maggots mixed in with them. Supposedly it is ok and healthy, but it is really disgusting.
KK: What do you think? Should we go ahead and bring the maggots in? They are a part of it. Let's ask Elliott what she thinks. She likes the compost incubator theme.
Pamala: Well, I think it is okay. It's an essential part of decomposition. Its kind of nice to juxtapose beauty with disgusting things. The maggots do their part to transform things and create the beauty.
KK: Yeah, I think its okay. Let's bring them in.
